BARNEYS NEW YORK x coconogacco Special Pop-Up Event

BARNEYS JAPAN and coconogacco are pleased to present a special pop-up event featuring an exhibition and sales of fashion items, as well as a window display installation.

Last year, coinciding with the reopening of the BARNEYS NEW YORK Ginza flagship store, “UNION SQUARE” was launched as a new pop-up space. The very first event held at this space was a collaboration with coconogacco.

This event marks the beginning of a year-long series of initiatives between BARNEYS JAPAN and coconogacco. Together, we aim to create opportunities for emerging creators to encounter and engage with society, while nurturing “the moment when tradition begins.”

POP-UP BRANDS

At “UNION SQUARE,” a series of pop-up events will showcase brands founded by coconogacco alumni who are now gaining attention both in Japan and internationally.

Featured brands include AKIKOAOKI, FETICO, KOTOHAYOKOZAWA, ODAKHA, PILLINGS, SOSHIOTSUKI, SPOMENIK, as well as written by, founded by coconogacco director Yamagata.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the unique perspectives and worlds of each brand through a selection of their works and creations.

WINDOW DISPLAY

“GIANT POP-UP BOOK WINDOW”

The window displays of BARNEYS NEW YORK have long served as a “museum of the city,” reflecting the spirit of the times and the culture of each era, while becoming part of the memories of many people.

For this project, the windows will be created by coconogacco, an institution that, under the supervision of its director Yamagata, has nurtured and introduced numerous creators who are now active both in Japan and abroad.

Rather than presenting finished products, the installation offers a glimpse into the designers’ thought processes, recreating their creative worlds as though they were pages spread open from a pop-up book.

Ideas overflow, notes fill the pages, and the “creative process” itself becomes a three-dimensional presence within the window space.

The four windows unfold like successive pages of a book, creating a visual journey through the history and evolution of coconogacco.

For the front-facing windows, Seiran Tsuno and Hana Yagi, two artists whose practices have attracted attention across disciplines, have been selected.

The side windows feature Akiko Aoki (AKIKOAOKI) and Kotohayokozawa (KOTOHAYOKOZAWA), two of coconogacco’s most distinguished alumni designers.

PROMISING CREATOR OF THE YEAR PRIZE

At the coconogacco graduation exhibition, awards are presented across eight categories based on votes from guest judges, lecturers, and visitors. Among these is the BARNEYS NEW YORK PROMISING CREATOR OF THE YEAR PRIZE, presented by BARNEYS JAPAN.

As part of this pop-up event, works by recipients of the prize will be exhibited.

Alongside the pop-up presentations by coconogacco alumni designers, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the current practices of emerging talents.
